What are we asking for when we pray, “Hallowed be your name”? In this episode, we continue our study of the Lord’s Prayer in Matthew 6 and come to the first petition Jesus teaches us to bring to the Father.
We explore what it means that God is holy: completely set apart from creation, and perfectly righteous in all His ways. Drawing on Isaiah, Ezekiel, and Hosea, we see why this prayer is really a request that God would make His name holy in our lives, undoing the patterns of the fall and replacing our idols with Himself.
Then we follow Jesus to the cross in John 12, where He prays, “Father, glorify your name,” and discover that we pray this petition as those already made holy in Christ. As we approach All Saints’ Day, we reflect on what it means to be called a saint, a holy one of God.
