Gospel Reminder & Gospel Response (1 Peter 2:9-12)

Peter's words in 1 Peter 2:9–12 contain one of the most beautiful summaries of the Christian life in all of Scripture: "But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession."

In this sermon, we explore Peter's reminder of God's sovereign grace and our response to that grace. By tracing Peter's use of Exodus 19 and Isaiah 43, we see how the story of Israel points forward to Jesus Christ—the true and faithful Israelite, God's Chosen One, who succeeded where His people failed and secured redemption for all who belong to Him.

Far from being a cold doctrine, election is presented as a source of deep comfort. God's people are saved not because they earned His favor, but because of His everlasting love and mercy displayed in Christ. As Article XVII of the Thirty-Nine Articles reminds us, the godly consideration of election is "full of sweet, pleasant, and unspeakable comfort."

Yet Peter's message does not stop with remembrance. Those whom God has redeemed are called to proclaim His excellencies. The church is a priestly people commissioned to declare the gospel through faithful witness, personal testimony, and holy living. In a world that remains in darkness, Christians are called to shine as citizens of another kingdom, displaying the transforming power of God's grace in both word and deed.
